Affordance
This body of work was made in response to an invitation by Aberystwyth University School of Art - 'The Land as Other.' Affordance is based on the tidal flux and flow of river and sea water within an estuary - (brackish water). There is a tidal change every six hours which is represented in the six pieces of seaweed. The seaweed and textile is printed with soil and sand ink, hand stitched onto vintage cotton pillow cases and handkerchiefs all sourced on the same day whilst walking near the estuary in Cardigan Wales. The environmental issues of pollution in these brackish waters are deeply concerning. This work also represents the flux and flow between family and friends, particularly my Welsh family, and how we exchange and change depending on the ‘current’ and depth of those relationships. This series of art work was exhibited at Aberystwyth University and Bristol University during the international contemporary print conference July 2022.
